What Makes WSU MW Sterilization Technology Unique?
Microwave heating refers to the use of electromagnetic waves of frequencies between 300 MHz and 300 GHz to generate heat in material. Two frequencies (915 MHz and 2450 MHz) are allocated by FCC for heating applications; 2450 MHz is used in domestic microwave oven and some industrial applications. WSU Microwave Sterilization Consortium chooses 915 MHz microwave for the design of the microwave sterilization systems for increased power efficiency, deeper penetration, and stable heating patterns.
Additional Advantages of This Technology
The new technology can reduce heating time of packaged foods by 1/4 to 1/10, as compared to conventional methods. The short processing time and uniform volumetric heating of the new technology offers significant advantages in producing high quality shelf-stable products as compared to conventional retorting that may often overcook the part of the product in contact with food packages. The systems can be designed in a batch mode or in a continuous mode.
